Sarsaparilla root from Smilax ornata is a woody, slightly sweet root with a long history of use as a traditional tonic and the original flavouring behind the classic sarsaparilla drink. Rich in steroidal saponins and phytosterols, this dried root is best prepared as a simmered decoction or used to make homemade sarsaparilla cordial and craft root beer. It has been traditionally valued for supporting skin health and general vitality.

Decoction: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of sarsaparilla root to 2 cups of water. Bring to the boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. The flavour is mildly sweet and earthy, making it a pleasant sarsaparilla tea on its own. Blends well with Licorice Root for natural sweetness and Dandelion Root for a traditional tonic blend.
Sarsaparilla cordial: Simmer 50 g of root in 1 litre of water for 30 minutes. Strain, add sugar or honey to taste (roughly equal parts), and a squeeze of lemon. Bottle and refrigerate. Dilute with sparkling water for a homemade sarsaparilla drink.
Tonic blend: Pairs naturally with Kola Nut, licorice, and ginger for a traditional herbal tonic formula.
Sarsaparilla was one of the most popular drinks in the Old West, served in saloons as a non-alcoholic alternative. It became a staple of the patent medicine era in the 1800s, marketed as a "blood purifier" and general tonic.
This is true sarsaparilla (Smilax ornata), not to be confused with the Australian native plant commonly called sarsaparilla (Hardenbergia violacea), which is a completely different species.
