Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is one of the most valued herbs in Ayurvedic tradition, where it has been used for thousands of years as a nourishing tonic for women's health. This certified organic root powder has a gently sweet, slightly bitter taste and is traditionally used to support hormonal balance, reproductive wellbeing, and overall vitality throughout all stages of a woman's life.
Key Benefits
- Women's reproductive support: Traditionally used to support a healthy menstrual cycle and reproductive wellbeing. Known as the "Queen of Herbs" in Ayurvedic tradition.
- Hormonal balance: Traditionally used to support the body during hormonal transitions, including perimenopause and menopause.
- Adaptogenic qualities: Classified as a Rasayana (rejuvenative) in Ayurveda, traditionally used to help the body adapt to stress and promote vitality.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to soothe and support the digestive tract, particularly when irritation or dryness is present.
- Certified organic: Organically grown root, dried and ground into a fine powder without synthetic additives.
Shatavari milk: Stir a quarter to half a teaspoon of shatavari powder into a cup of warm milk (dairy or plant-based) with a pinch of honey or cinnamon. This is the traditional Ayurvedic preparation method, taken once or twice daily.
In smoothies: Blend into your morning smoothie for a nourishing start to the day. The mild flavour blends easily with fruit and nut milks.
Blending: Traditionally paired with Ashwagandha for a balanced adaptogenic combination. Also complements Shatavari well with Chamomile as an evening wind-down routine.
The name "shatavari" comes from Sanskrit, most commonly translated as "she who possesses a hundred husbands," a poetic reference to its traditional reputation as a rejuvenative tonic for women. Another interpretation is "she who has a hundred roots," describing the plant's distinctive cluster of tuberous roots.
Shatavari appears in the Rig Veda (c. 1500 BCE) and the Charaka Samhita, two of the oldest texts in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is classified among the most important rejuvenative herbs.
