Fumitory tea (Fumaria officinalis), also known as earth smoke, is a traditional European herb valued for its role in supporting healthy digestive and liver function. This certified organic fumitory has a distinctly bitter flavour that reflects its traditional use as a digestive bitter. Fumitory has been used in European herbal medicine for centuries and is approved by the German Commission E for gallbladder complaints.

Tea infusion: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried fumitory to a cup of freshly boiled water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink before meals for digestive support. The flavour is quite bitter.
Skin blend: Combine fumitory with Nettle Leaf and Dandelion Root for a traditional skin support tea. Add Peppermint to balance the bitterness.

The name "fumitory" comes from the Latin fumus terrae (smoke of the earth). Medieval writers noted that the plant seemed to rise from the ground like wisps of smoke, and some believed it was produced by vapours from the earth rather than from seed.
Despite belonging to the poppy family (Papaveraceae), fumitory contains no opiates. Its alkaloids (protopine, fumarine) have a completely different pharmacological profile.
