Botanical Name: Ocimum basilicum sp.

Greek basil is sometimes called Greek Columnar basil or Greek Bush Basil. It is different from the Greek mini basil, also called Greek basil.

This plant is a short-lived perennial and needs to be replaced every three years to maintain a bushy healthy plant.

We have grown this basil for 30 years and have always produced more plants by cuttings as they do not flower as often as the common sweet basil.

Upright, bushy plant with small, highly fragrant leaves that are dark green.

It likes full sun for the best growth and good drainage. It will not tolerate frost, so it needs protection during winter in cooler climates. Or it can be grown as an annual.

Greek basil is a popular herb used in Mediterranean cuisine. It has a sweet, slightly spicy flavour and is often used in tomato-based dishes, salads, soups, and sauces. It can also be used to make pesto or infused in olive oil.

Some ideas for using your Greek basil.

Caprese salad: Greek basil leaves, fresh tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese can make a delicious Caprese salad.

Pasta dishes: It can be added to pasta dishes such as spaghetti, fettuccine, or lasagna for a burst of flavour.

Pizza: It can be used as a topping on pizza and other herbs like oregano and thyme.

Soups and stews: can be added to bean soups and stews to enhance their flavour.

Dressings and marinades: Greek basil can be used to make dressings and marinades for salads or meat dishes.

Roasted vegetables: It can be used as a seasoning for roasted vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.

Sandwiches: It can add flavour to sandwiches such as a tomato and mozzarella sandwich, salad or chicken sandwich.

Sauces: Greek basil can be used to make sauces like tomato sauce, pesto sauce, or marinara sauce.
