Botanical Name: Jasminum polyanthum

History: Jasminum polyanthum, commonly known as pink jasmine or white jasmine, is native to China and Myanmar (Burma). It has been widely cultivated for its attractive and sweetly fragrant flowers. The plant has a long history of use in gardens and indoor settings around the world, appreciated for its rapid growth and profuse blooms.

Description: Jasminum polyanthumis a fast-growing, evergreen vine that can reach lengths of up to 6 meters under optimal conditions. It has dark green, pinnate leaves with 5 to 7 leaflets. From late winter to spring, it produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that are white on the inside and pink on the outside.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season and reduce watering in the winter.
  • Temperature: Prefers mild temperatures and can be sensitive to extreme heat or cold.

Medicinal Use: Traditionally, Jasminum polyanthum has been used in Chinese medicine for its supposed antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific studies supporting these uses are limited.

Culinary Use: This jasmine is not commonly used in cooking.

Other Uses: Primarily used for ornamental purposes, Jasminum polyanthum is popular in gardens and as a houseplant. Its fragrant flowers make it a desirable choice for indoor areas and patios. Additionally, it can be used in perfumery and aromatherapy.
