Licorice sticks (Glycyrrhiza glabra) are whole pieces of dried licorice root in their most traditional form. These certified organic licorice root sticks can be chewed directly, simmered into a rich decoction, or added to tea blends for natural sweetness. With a distinctive flavour around 50 times sweeter than sugar, licorice sticks have been chewed and brewed across cultures for thousands of years to support digestive comfort and soothe the throat.
Key Benefits
- Chew straight from the packet: Licorice sticks can be chewed directly for a naturally sweet, satisfying experience. A traditional habit that has been enjoyed worldwide for centuries and may help those looking to reduce sugar or snack cravings.
- Digestive comfort: Traditionally used to support healthy digestive function. Chewing the root slowly releases the sweet, soothing compounds directly.
- Throat soothing: Traditionally used as a demulcent herb to help soothe sore throats and relieve mild coughs. The naturally coating quality of the root is especially welcome in winter.
- Brewing and decoctions: Simmer sticks in water for a rich, sweet tea. Add a stick to any herbal blend for natural sweetness. Also used in home brewing and distilling.
- Certified organic: Whole root sticks grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.
Chewing: Simply chew on a licorice stick for natural sweetness and flavour. The root softens as you chew and slowly releases its compounds. A popular traditional habit and a natural alternative to sugary snacks.
Decoction: Break or chop 1 to 2 licorice sticks into small pieces and simmer in 2 cups of water for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and drink. Pairs beautifully with Ginger Root for a warming winter tea, or with Peppermint for a refreshing digestive blend.
Blend sweetener: Drop a whole stick into a pot of herbal tea while brewing to add natural sweetness. Works especially well with bitter herbs like Dandelion Root or earthy teas like Licorice Root Tea (cut form).
Licorice root was found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, dating its use to at least 1323 BCE. Alexander the Great reportedly had his soldiers carry licorice sticks on campaigns, believing it helped them stay hydrated during long marches. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, licorice root is known as Gan Cao, the "Great Harmoniser."
Licorice root is not classified as toxic to dogs or cats in small amounts. However, the glycyrrhizin compound can be harmful to pets in large quantities, so store sticks out of reach.
