Botanical Name: Sanguisorba minor

Salad Burnet is a clumping perennial, grows to a height of 40-60cm with pinnate leaves, with pairs of round toothed leaflets. Flowers that appear in summer are tufted round balls green and crimson in colour on top of thin green stems.

The Latin name sanguisorba means to absorb blood and the leaves were used to stop bleeding.

Fresh and cooling with a nutty cucumber flavour. Add the leaves to salads, just run fingers down stem over the salad bowl and the leaves will fall in, no need to tear them they are the perfect size. Add to sandwiches spread with cream cheese or avocado. Yoghurt with chopped dill and Salad Burnet makes a great addition to Indian curries… or if you don’t like the taste of coriander in your salsa’s and Mexican dishes try adding Salad Burnet instead. The leaves can be added to vinegars, salad dressings, butters, cheese and dips. You can use a stem of the leaflets in Pimm’s instead of the slice of cucumber or the leaves can be floated in a punch bowl.

The leaves contain vitamin C, B and A, calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium.

The leaves can be used freshly mashed to help stop bleeding and a leaf tea will stop diarrhoea. Salad Burnet makes a cooling floral water that will revive and refresh your skin in hot or dry weather.

Growing Conditions

Grow salad burnet in a moist, well drained soil in a sunny to semi-shade position. It’s clumping habit and attractive rosette of leaves make it suitable for a garden border.

I’m so glad I found this great family business! In my European home country 'salad burnett' grows in the meadows and being homesick I purchased this plant… grateful to receive a beautiful strong plant a week ago I gave it a special space in my small garden :) And now for the first time since ages I ate a leaf which is described to taste a bit like cucumber… and yeah! It really does :) It looks good as decoration and tastes delicious in herb yogurt or salad dressing! Thank you so much for this lovely herb!

    Great Plants!

I bought a range of plants - salad burnet, elderberry, echinacea, ajuga, ginger, lemon balm - and they are going from strength to strength! They came excellently packed and the prompt after-sales email gave me just the right info I needed to give them the best start. Five stars and thank you!

    Very pleased

My online order for herbs, that I couldn’t source locally, was received overnight. It was such a great surprise! The plants were in good condition and I had detailed information about how to care for them upon delivery and when planting. They are now planted and doing well. I look forward to seeing them grow.

    Excellent products!

All herbs received the next day (except in one instance when a major Section 44 bushfire interrupted the post so neither Herb Cottage or AusPost can be blamed for that) in excellent condition. The herbs are doing very well - going gangbusters in fact! The instructions for treating the plants on reciept really work, so follow them! Great videos on the same topic as well on the Herb Cottage website. And last but definitely not least - what a great range of hard-to-find herbs! Fantastic! Dr Alex Newman.

    Salad Burnett

Lovely plant once established. Has established well after a week. It had started to produce more leaves and is looking beautiful. Its coping well with scortching weather partial shade and with good watering. It is a daintly looking plant.
