Salvia muirii is native to South Africa’s southern coast and suits our conditions well. It forms a neat shrub to around 80 cm with fine, grey-green leaves that are lightly fragrant, brush past and they release a fresh, herbal scent.
Violet-blue flowers with a white beeline appear in spring and continue through most of summer, drawing bees and other pollinators. It’s very drought-tolerant and prefers a sunny, well-drained spot.
Ideal for small gardens, pots and path edges (so you catch the scent). Keep it tidy and blooming with light tip-pruning through the warmer months, and give a slightly harder shape-up in late winter if needed.
