Senna pods powder is ground from the seed pods of Senna alexandrina, one of the oldest and best known herbs in Western and Ayurvedic practice alike. Pod preparations are traditionally considered gentler than the leaf, releasing their sennosides more slowly. It is a short course herb, used sparingly rather than daily.
Key Benefits
- Pods rather than leaf: pod preparations have always been regarded as the milder, slower acting option.
- Small doses go a long way: a quarter to half a teaspoon is a typical serve, so a bag lasts.
- Ground ready to use: no crushing, no straining, just stir it into water or juice.
- More than a thousand years of recorded use: senna appears in medical texts going back to the ninth century and is still in pharmacies today.
- Short course herb: traditionally used for a few days at a time, never as an everyday drink.
Start with a quarter of a teaspoon stirred into a glass of water or juice, taken in the evening. It usually acts 8 to 12 hours later, which is why bedtime is the traditional timing. Do not go beyond half a teaspoon, and keep it to a few days at a time. Drink plenty of water alongside it.
Old formulas rarely used senna on its own. Fennel Seed and Ginger Root were added to settle the griping it can cause. If you want something far gentler and suitable for regular use, Psyllium Husk is the usual choice.
Senna has been in continuous medical use for well over a thousand years, and it is one of the few herbs that carried straight through into modern pharmacy largely unchanged.
The pods actually carry slightly more sennosides than the leaf by weight, yet they are still considered the milder preparation because those compounds are released more gradually.
The plant is a small legume, and before grinding the pods look like flat papery pea pods.
