Shatavari Powder is the dried root of Asparagus racemosus, a climbing relative of garden asparagus, milled to a fine, pale powder. It is the form most often used for shatavari milk in Ayurvedic tradition, and the simplest way to take shatavari day to day, because it stirs straight into warm milk or a smoothie with no simmering. The taste is mildly sweet with a faint bitter finish.
Key Benefits
- Women's wellbeing: Traditionally used in Ayurveda to support a healthy menstrual cycle and reproductive wellbeing, which is why it is often called the "Queen of Herbs".
- Through hormonal changes: Traditionally taken to support the body through hormonal transitions, including perimenopause and menopause.
- A nourishing tonic: Classed as a rasayana in Ayurveda, a restorative herb traditionally taken through times of stress and tiredness.
- Quick to use: No simmering or straining. Stir it in and drink.
- Certified organic: Organically grown shatavari root, finely milled.
Shatavari milk: Stir a quarter to half a teaspoon into a cup of warm milk (dairy or plant-based) with a little honey and a pinch of Cardamom or Cinnamon Powder. Traditionally taken in the evening.
In smoothies: Half a teaspoon disappears into a smoothie or a glass of nut milk. The mild sweetness sits well with banana, dates and Maca Powder.
With ashwagandha: Shatavari is traditionally partnered with Ashwagandha Powder. Half a teaspoon of each in warm milk is the usual way.
Start with a quarter teaspoon and build up. For decoctions and slow-simmered shatavari milk, we also stock the cut root as Shatavari.
The name "shatavari" comes from Sanskrit and is most often translated as "she who possesses a hundred husbands", a nod to its long reputation as a women's tonic. Another reading is "she who has a hundred roots", after the plant's thick cluster of tuberous roots.
Fine powders take up moisture from the air, so keep the bag sealed and use a dry spoon. A little clumping is normal and breaks up when stirred.
