Spirulina powder is dried Arthrospira platensis, a spiral-shaped organism grown in shallow warm ponds and dried straight after harvest. It runs 55 to 70 percent protein by dry weight and carries all the essential amino acids, which is rare in a plant-source food. The flavour is bold and savoury, closer to seaweed than to leafy greens.
Key Benefits
- Genuinely protein dense: 55 to 70 percent protein by dry weight, with the full set of essential amino acids.
- A real iron source: a level teaspoon carries around 3mg of iron, plus calcium, magnesium, potassium and trace minerals.
- Certified organic: grown and processed to organic certification standards.
- Mixes cold: it blends straight into smoothies, juices and dressings with no cooking, which suits it, since heat dulls the colour.
- That colour: the deep blue-green comes from phycocyanin, the same pigment used commercially as a natural blue food colouring.
Start small. Half a teaspoon, about 1.5g, is enough for a first go, working up to one or two teaspoons a day if it suits you. The savoury flavour is strong, so it does best in a smoothie with banana, mango or pineapple behind it. It also stirs into juice, yoghurt, pesto and salad dressings.
For a green blend, mix it with Moringa Leaf Powder. If you find the flavour heavy, Roasted Carob Powder covers it well, and Maca Root Powder is a common partner in a morning smoothie. Keep the jar sealed, cool and dark, because light fades both the colour and the pigment.
Spirulina is not really an algae. It is a cyanobacterium, a single-celled organism that photosynthesises like a plant but is built more like a bacterium, and it grows in tiny spirals you can see under a microscope.
Aztec markets sold it long before anyone had a laboratory name for it, skimmed off lake surfaces and dried into cakes called tecuitlatl.
Space agencies keep coming back to it as a candidate crop for long missions. It grows fast, needs very little room and recycles carbon dioxide while it does so.
One honest note: spirulina is often listed as a source of vitamin B12, but most of what it contains is a pseudo form that the body cannot reliably use. If B12 is what you are after, look elsewhere.
Not suitable for anyone with phenylketonuria. Best avoided if you have an autoimmune condition, or take blood-thinning or immune-suppressing medication.
