Botanical Name: Chrysanthemum vulgare. Syn Tanecetum vulgare
Tansy is a perennial herb with erect stems up to 1m, which are covered by compound feathery leaves dark green in colour. Yellow button like flowers grow in clusters at the top of the stems.
Tansy is not used much these days medicinally because of its toxicity. Traditionally it was used against threadworms, roundworms and tapeworms.
Tansy is used as a fly repellent and is a useful companion plant in the garden or near fruit trees to deter insects.
Sprinkle leaves of tansy into the compost heaps to help decomposition.
Growing Conditions
Tansy will grow in sun to part shade and grows in a wide range of soils. In some areas in Europe it grows on wasteland and beside roads.
