Botanical Name: Chrysopogon zizanioides
Vetiver is a tall, clumping grass with a dense root system that grows straight down and can reach three metres or more. It's widely used for holding banks and slopes together, as a low-maintenance hedge, and for mulch. The roots are also where Vetiver Essential Oil comes from.
Our vetiver is the sterile, non-seeding type, so it won't spread through the garden by seed. It stays in a clump where you plant it, and new plants come from dividing the clump.
Growing Conditions
Vetiver does best in full sun and handles most soils, from sand to heavy clay. Once it's established it copes with both drought and wet feet. Cut it back to about 30cm in late winter to keep it tidy and bring on fresh growth.
