Wheatgrass powder is the young shoot of common wheat (Triticum aestivum), cut about a week after sprouting when the grass is at its greenest, then dried and milled. It tastes like fresh cut grass, green and faintly sweet with a bitter finish, and a teaspoon blends straight into juice or a smoothie without a juicer in sight.
Key Benefits
- Cut young: harvested at around seven to ten days, before the plant puts its energy into forming grain.
- Rich in chlorophyll: the deep green colour is chlorophyll, and it is most of what wheatgrass is known for.
- A plant source of iron: wheatgrass also supplies vitamin C and vitamin K.
- Certified organic: grown and processed to organic certification standards.
- Finely milled: it disperses in liquid rather than clumping, so no juicer or shot glass required.
- Cut before the grain forms: gluten sits in the wheat kernel, not the leaf, though anyone highly sensitive should note that cross contact during growing and milling cannot be ruled out.
Start with half a teaspoon in a glass of juice or water and work up to one or two teaspoons a day. Apple or citrus juice does the best job of rounding off the grassy taste. Add it at the end of blending rather than to a hot drink, since boiling water flattens both the colour and the flavour.
If green powders are your thing, Moringa Leaf Powder is the milder one to blend alongside it, and Alfalfa is the traditional green to keep beside it on the shelf. A pinch of Peppermint in the same smoothie covers the grass note better than extra fruit does.
Cereal grasses were first studied as a food in the 1930s, when a food chemist dried young grass leaves and fed the powder to his hens through winter. Egg production jumped, and decades of cereal grass research followed.
Wheatgrass and wheat are the same plant. The difference is timing: cut it at a week old and it is wheatgrass, leave it in the ground and it becomes a wheat crop.
Chlorophyll and haemoglobin have strikingly similar molecular structures, magnesium sitting at the centre of one and iron at the centre of the other. The point gets stretched a long way in marketing, but the chemistry itself is real.
Wheatgrass is high in vitamin K, so check with your doctor if you take blood thinning medication. Some people find it unsettles the stomach at first, which is why it pays to start with a small amount. This information is not a substitute for medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider before use, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medication.
