Witch hazel powder is the dried leaf of Hamamelis virginiana milled fine, for people who make their own skin care at home. The leaf is high in tannins, which is what gives witch hazel its familiar astringent, tightening feel on the skin. This is a topical ingredient only, not something to eat or brew as a tea.

For a mask, mix one teaspoon of the powder with two teaspoons of a clay or fine oat base, then add warm water a few drops at a time until you have a spreadable paste. Leave it on for ten minutes and rinse with warm water. Patch test on your inner arm and wait a day before putting anything new on your face.
For a compress, stir half a teaspoon into a cup of just-boiled water, let it stand until it is comfortably warm, then soak a clean cloth and lay it on the skin. It blends well with ground Calendula Petals and Rose Petals, and a little Marshmallow Root Powder adds slip if the mix feels drying.
Keep the powder in an airtight jar away from light and moisture, and mix each preparation fresh rather than storing it wet.
The name has nothing to do with witches. It comes from the old word wych, meaning to bend, after the springy forked branches that were once cut as divining rods for finding water.
The shrub flowers in late autumn and winter, thin ribbon-like yellow petals opening on bare branches when almost nothing else is out. Last season's seed capsules ripen at the same time and fire their seeds several metres.
Most bottled witch hazel is a distillate, which carries the aroma but very little of the tannin, since tannins are not volatile and stay behind in the still. Working from the milled leaf is how you get that astringency into a preparation.
