Darjeeling tea is one of the lightest, most fragrant black teas (Camellia sinensis), with soft floral notes and the grape-like muscatel character it's known for. Drink it without milk so the aroma comes through.
Key Benefits
- Light and floral: a pale amber cup with delicate floral notes and a gentle, dry finish.
- That muscatel note: a fruity flavour tea tasters compare to muscat grapes, and part of the reason it's been called the champagne of teas.
- Best without milk: milk and sugar cover up its delicate flavour, so it's traditionally drunk black.
- An afternoon black tea: lighter in body than breakfast teas, and at home with cake, scones and sandwiches.
- Certified organic loose leaf: straight organic black tea with nothing added.
Hot: Use 1 heaped teaspoon (about 2g) per cup. Let the boiled kettle sit for a minute or two so the water is around 90 to 95°C, then steep for 3 to 4 minutes. Fully boiling water and a long steep bring out more astringency and flatten the floral notes.
Iced: Add 2 tablespoons to a litre of cold water and leave it in the fridge overnight, then strain. It comes out soft and fragrant with very little bitterness.
If you like the lighter side of tea, Sencha Green Tea is worth a try too. For a fragrant black tea that does take milk, there's Earl Grey Tea.
The muscatel note gets help from tiny insects. Leafhoppers feed on the young leaves, and the plant responds by making aroma compounds close to those in muscat grapes.
Most Darjeeling black tea is made from the small-leaf sinensis variety of the tea plant, a different form from the large-leaf plant behind Assam. The dry leaf is often a mix of brown and green.
Keep it sealed, cool and dark. The floral aroma is the first thing to fade, so it's at its best within a year.
Contains caffeine, much like other black teas, so keep to a few cups a day if pregnant. Tea can reduce iron absorption, so have it between meals if your iron is low.
