Bearberry tea (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), also known as uva ursi, is one of the most widely used herbs in Western herbal tradition for urinary tract support. The dried leaves produce a mildly astringent, slightly bitter infusion with a long history of use across European, Native American, and Chinese herbal traditions. Bearberry contains arbutin, a naturally occurring compound that is the focus of extensive modern research into urinary health.

Key Benefits

  • Urinary tract tradition: One of the most established herbs in Western herbal medicine for supporting healthy urinary tract function. Used for this purpose across multiple herbal traditions for centuries.
  • Rich in arbutin: Contains arbutin (a hydroquinone glycoside) as its principal bioactive compound, along with tannins, flavonoids, and ursolic acid.
  • Astringent action: The high tannin content gives bearberry its characteristic astringent quality, traditionally valued for toning and supporting mucous membrane health.
  • European pharmacopoeia herb: Recognised in the European Pharmacopoeia, with well-documented standards for quality and active compound content.
  • Short-term use: Traditionally used for brief periods (up to one week) as a targeted herbal support, not as an everyday tea.

Bearberry tea (cold maceration): Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried bearberry leaf to a cup of cold water and let it soak for 12 to 24 hours. Strain before drinking. Cold preparation is preferred because it extracts the arbutin while reducing tannin content, which is gentler on the stomach.

Hot infusion: If time is short, pour freshly boiled water over 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaf and steep for 15 minutes. Note that this method extracts more tannins, which may cause stomach discomfort in some people.

Blending ideas: Combine with Marshmallow Root for a soothing blend, or with Dandelion Leaf for additional support. A pinch of Peppermint can help soften the bitter flavour.

The name says it twice: "Arctostaphylos" means "bear's grapes" in Greek, and "uva-ursi" means "bear's grapes" in Latin. Bears are known to forage on the bright red berries in the wild. Native Americans used the leaves as a key ingredient in kinnikinnick, a traditional smoking mixture used in ceremonies and social gatherings.

Bearberry is not listed as toxic to dogs by the ASPCA. Cats are more sensitive to the arbutin compound, so keep dried leaves out of reach of cats as a precaution.
