Botanical Name:Origanum laevigatum 'Hopley's'
Hopley’s Oregano is a popular ornamental variety of oregano, growing about 45-60 cm high and spreading a similar distance creating small, trailing mounds. The deep green foliage is fragrant and turns a reddish-purple colour in autumn as the weather cools. The delicate pink – purple flowers appear in late summer and continue through autumn. The profuse but tiny floral clusters are held on small branched stalks that are held aloft, over the tiny smooth, green leaves. The flowers are insect and butterfly attractants and when dried they hold their colour very nicely.
There are many different varieties of oregano, each with different characteristics and culinary uses. Oregano also has powerful healing properties including use as a painkiller, anti-septic and anti-inflammatory.
Please see our description of Common Oregano and our other Oregano Varieties for more information.
Growing Conditions
Hopley’s Oregano prefers full sun to part shade and does well with average moisture to dry conditions, tolerating drought well. It should grow in most, well drained, soil types and is considered to be a tough plant once established. It is easy to care for and has a medium growth rate. You may divide the plant during spring or take cuttings to create new plants. Cutting back the old flower heads will increase the flowering season through to autumn. It does well in rockeries, borders, as an edging plant or simply mixed amongst other plants where it will fill vacant spaces. It is also suitable as a container plant where it may be planted alone or mixed with other herbs.
Culinary Uses
Hopley’s Oregano has a mild oregano flavour and may be used in many culinary applications. The herb may be harvested fresh and chopped for use in breads, pasta dishes, stuffing, as pizza toppings, or to make oregano butter. The flavour is strongest just before flowering and small branches may be collected and used immediately. Alternatively the branches may be bunched and hung to dry, with the dry leaves stripped from the branches and stored in jars.
