Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is a warm, aromatic spice with a rich, sweet, slightly woody flavour that is essential in baking, savoury cooking, and spiced drinks worldwide. This certified organic nutmeg delivers the deep, complex flavour that makes it indispensable in custards, bechamel sauce, mulled wine, pumpkin pie, and countless other recipes. Nutmeg is also a traditional warming digestive spice with a long history in herbal medicine.

Key Benefits

  • Essential baking and cooking spice: A classic ingredient in custards, eggnog, bechamel, mashed potatoes, spinach dishes, pumpkin pie, apple crumble, and spice cakes. A little goes a long way.
  • Warming digestive spice: Traditionally used in herbal medicine to support healthy digestive function and ease occasional nausea and stomach discomfort. Its warming quality is valued in cold weather.
  • Mulled wine and spiced drinks: A key ingredient in mulled wine, chai, eggnog, golden milk, and hot chocolate. Pairs naturally with Cinnamon, Cloves, and Ginger.
  • Certified organic: Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers.

Cooking and baking: Grate a small amount of nutmeg directly into dishes. Use in bechamel sauce, cheese sauces, custard, rice pudding, pumpkin soup, and spice cakes. Start with a pinch and adjust to taste.

Mulled wine: Add a whole nutmeg (or half, grated) to a pot of red wine with Cinnamon Sticks, Cloves, star anise, orange peel, and honey. Simmer gently for 20 minutes.

Golden milk: Grate a pinch of nutmeg into warm milk with Turmeric, cinnamon, and honey for a warming evening drink.

Nutmeg and mace come from the same fruit. The nutmeg is the seed, while mace is the lacy red aril (covering) that surrounds it. Both are aromatic, but mace has a lighter, more delicate flavour.

The Banda Islands of Indonesia were once the world's only source of nutmeg, making them the most valuable real estate on Earth during the 16th and 17th centuries. The spice trade wars over nutmeg shaped the colonial history of Southeast Asia.

Safe at normal culinary quantities (a pinch to half a teaspoon per recipe). Do not consume large amounts. Excessive nutmeg intake (more than 1 to 2 tablespoons) can cause serious side effects including nausea, hallucinations, and toxicity. Toxic to dogs. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
